Do you often put on 5-10 pounds during the holidays? It is so easy to do with all the foods that wreck your fat-burning metabolism. Here are a few tricks to keep your cell-fires burning.
Fortify against the onslaught of sugar.
Sugar is the main cause of your body storing fat, wrecking your metabolism and triggering sweet cravings. However, you can manage sugar indulgences ~ or at least follow overindulgent days with "clean eating" days with these following practices.
Keep on hand a big non-dairy veggie soup, a healthy casserole (see Recipes Hearty Lentil Soupand Cauliflower Cassarole), various kinds of salad (homemade cole slaw, chicken salad (use an oil and vinegar dressing instead of mayo for each) , gluten free crackers, veggie sticks, etc.
Choose healthy drinks in order to avoid alcohol, fruit juice (especially bottled but even fresh), sodas ~ are all surefire fat-storing sugars. Stock up on healthy options and take them with you when you go to holiday events.
• Make a gallon of lemon water sweetened with stevia, birch sugar or coconut sugar/syrup. Or use unsweetened natural carbonated water (avoid the ones with additives).
• Stock up on Kombuchu, a fermented pro-biotic drink. There are some great products out, like the Enlightened brand, which are low sugar and taste like ginger ale, or lemon. They even have green juice options.
Go easy on sauces and gravies. Take only a teaspoon or use a bit of broth (I like the Rapunzel Vegan Boullion cubes for broth, or chicken broth) or even use a non-dairy salad dressing as alternatives.
Choose gluten-free products as much as possible. More and more people experience bloating, constipation, brain fog, achy joints, fatigue, carb-craving. Some good gluten-free bread, muffin and wrap products are from Sami’s Bakery, Ezekial’s sprouted wheat (sprouting digests the gluten), Udi’s and Rudy’s. You will need to heat in a toaster oven to soften them a bit but not until crisp.
Choose seasonings that boost your cell fires (metabolism). Many herbs and spices are great for helping you burn fat faster and feel satisfied longer. The spices are allspice, black pepper, capsaicin (in cayenne), cardamon, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, nutmeg, turmeric. The spices go well in teas, holiday drinks, baked goods, cereals. Be creative!
The herbs that raise your metabolic rate are marjoram oregano, sage, thyme, garlic. Use the herbs in soups, salads, veggie dishes, egg dishes, sauces.
Put this list on an index card and put on the fridge. Use the ones you like best ~ this is how your body tells you what it needs (although that principle does not hold for when you crave sugar, alcohol, cigarettes or other substances that are not good for us.)
